Text Box: Cichlid Fish Biology: Evolution in Action

Over 1,400 species of cichlid fishes are found in Lakes Malawi, Tanganyika and Victoria in Africa. There are different species in each lake and each habitat within a lake. They are one of the classic examples of rapid evolution in action.

Professor Turners research group works mainly on the behaviour, ecology, evolution and genetics of Lake Malawi cichlids, particularly aiming to understand the reasons for their explosive evolution. This work involves field work in Africa, (including underwater research), molecular genetic studies and mate choice and breeding experiments in the aquarium. Cichlid fish (such as tilapias) are increasingly important food fish worldwide, and research on these fishes will be helped when the tilapia genome sequence is completed in the next few years.
