Activities

a. In August, 2002, EPSRC awarded Brown an ad hoc Public Awareness Grant of £5,000, to upgrade the web site of the Centre for the Popularisation of Mathematics, of which he is Vice Director. The detailed work was carried out by Mike Yates by the end of December, 2002, and the highly successful results may be seen at www.popmath.org.uk

b. A research grant application to EPSRC on `Higher dimensional algebra and differential geometry' to support a Visiting Fellowship for Professor J. Glazebrook (Eastern Illinois and Urbana) for two visits in 2003-2005 was submitted early in 2003, and this was successful. Glazebrook visited Bangor July 15-Aug 11, 2003. Extensive discussions took place and papers were planned on work in this area, one of which is in press. Part of the Case for Support was that this activity was complementary to the work for the Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship. Glazebrook will visit again in May, 2004.

d. Brown continues to participate in seminars and discussions in the Mathematics Department of the School of Informatics, Bangor, and is currently writing two papers with Professor Porter (Bangor) and Prof H. K. Kamps (Fernuniversität, Hagen). A paper with Dr. Wensley (Bangor) on categories of graphs is in preparation.

e. Brown acted as External Examiner for a Warwick Mathematics PhD Thesis in March, 2003.

f. Brown continues as Editor of `Applied Categorical Structures', and on the Management Committees of the international electronic journals `Theory and Applications of Categories', and of `Homology, Homotopy and Applications'.

g. A continuing collaboration with Bak on Global actions and groupoid atlases (also with T. Porter at Bangor, G. Minian at Buenos Aires) is likely to have wide consequences. This work was advertised at the lecture at QMW 2.2(ix).

h. Invited talks in the Isle of Man to their Mathematics Society on `Raising Public Awareness of Mathematics' and to a sixth form Mathematics Workshop at Ramsay Grammar School on `How Mathematics Gets into Knots', October 22- 23, 2003.

i. Presenting the Mathematics and Knots Exhibition, and joining with John Robinson,  for the library of the Royal Institution on October 31, 2003, on the occasion of the Discourse of David Acheson on ``1089''.

j. Discussions with EPSRC Visiting Fellow Jim Glazebrook (Eastern Illinois) on `Higher dimensional algebra and differential geometry', May 16-June 5, 2004.

k. Participation in the EPSRC Workshop on Public Engagement, Eynsham Hall, Oxon, June 21-22, 2004.
