I am a Professor in the School of Computer Science, Bangor University, UK. Previously lecturer Lecturer at Kent (1999), Senior Lecturer at Kent (2004) and moved to Bangor University in 2007 becoming a full professor in 2015.

I research Visual Analytics - analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive interfaces.

My research is interdisciplinary, investigating (1) how to visualize and analyze large datasets that are complex, incomplete, and uncertain and spread over different data sources, (2) how to communicate and discuss the results with different experts and stakeholders, and (3) learning analytics and how to design, sketch and plan data visualization tools. In fact, I am creator of the Five Design Sheet methodology, first author on the book Five Design-Sheets: Creative Design and Sketching for Computing and Visualization (Purchase on Amazon the FdS book or from purchase directly from Springer) and joint author of the journal paper Sketching Designs.

I have applied my research to several domains - collaborating with experts from many domains - most recently focusing on heritage and archaeology, oceanography, and social networking domains.

My hypothesis: "By displaying the data in several different ways, and allowing the user to highly interact with it, then the user gains a better understanding of their data". I use alternative representations, multiple coordinated views, and look to move beyond the desktop to use other forms of display and Human-computer interactions (e.g., table top displays and tangible artefacts).

I instigated and chaired Coordinated & Multiple View conference series that ran 2003,4,5,6,7 and author of the popular "State of the Art in Coordinated Multiple Views" paper. I also run the HeritageTogether project.

•    Member of the pan-Wales Research Institute of Visual Computing (RIVIC).
•    Previous chair of the UK Chapter of Eurographics (EGUK) that ran TPCG.
•    Chaired and organized Eurographics 2011 in Llandudno.
•    Co-chair  IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology 2011 and 2012,
•    Joint chair of EuroVA 2014 and EuroVA 2015.
•    Associate editor of Information Visualization (Sage),
•    Founding member of the UK Visual Analytics Consortium (since 2009).
•    I instigated and chaired Coordinated & Multiple View conference series that ran 2003,4,5,6,7
•    I also run the HeritageTogether project.
